MWO Mech Weapon Information

Mechs use a large arsinal of weapons and as the game progresses more and more weapon systems will be added to the game. Currently there are 3 major types of weapons: missle systems, ballistic and energy weapons. The following values are from Ohm's quick reference sheets.

Missle Systems:

Missle systems are guided or dumb fired. There are 3 types of missle systems: LRM (long range missles), SRM (short range missles) and SSRM(streak missle launcher). The SSRM missle system is a guided version of the SRM that requires all missles to have a lock before firing. SRM missles are dumb fired at a target with no guidance system. There is one other type of missle and that is a NARC missle but this missle type strictly acts as a targeting beacon that will last 30 seconds and reduces time to target enemy mechs.

Artemis IV FCS is an upgrade that can be purchased to upgrade your missle systems. This system inproves the grouping size of LRM and SRM volleys. This system also decreased time it takes for you get a lock with LRMs and increases the strength of the lock. This upgrade does not work with Streak Missle Systems. If you have this upgrade missle systems will now take up one extra crit slot each.

Ballistic Systems:

Ballistic weapons are weapons that shoot projectiles and in MWO they include the Autocannon, Ultra Autocannon, LB-X Autocanon, Gauss Riffle and Machine Gun. I expect we will see Rotary and Light-Weight variants appear as the game goes on but these are what exist today.

autocannonThe regular Autocannon exists in 4 sizes the AC2, AC5, AC10 and AC20. These are auto-loading dirrect-fire weapons that shot rounds. The larger the AC number the larger shell that is fired and the more damage it does. Expect different shell types to eventualy be introduced.

The Ultra Autocannon is an autocannon with a modified breech mechanism for rapid ammo reloading. The this Autocannon does the same damage per-shell but can fire rounds at about twice as fast as a regular AC but jams 25% of the time. Regular autocannons never jam. Currently there is only one type of Ultra Autocannon available the Ultra AC/5.

LB-X Autocannons are Autocannons that fire cluster rounds esintaly turning this gun into a shotgun. The only LB-X Aucotcannon currently available is the LB 10-X AC.

gauss rifleGauss Rifles are different that autocannons, these weapons are basicly rail guns, they use electromagnets to propel slugs of ferrous nickel-iron alloy at a target at near relativistic speeds. The gauss ammo is not suseptable to exploding if damaged but if the weapon is hit it can explode and do a lot of damage to the mech.

Machine Guns are light weight weapons that have a high fire rate but do very little damage. These guns can rattle an enemy but in all honesty it takes a lot of rounds to do much damage to an enemy when using this weapon.

AMS or Anti-Missle System is an automatic defensive system that fires projectiles at incoming missles.

Energy Weapons:

There is two different types of energy weapons, lasers and PPCs.

lasersLasers are light beam weapns that can be used to burn into enemy mechs. Basic lasers have 3 types small, medium and large. There are additional types of lasers, ER (extended range) and pulse lasers. ER lasers do what the name implies they do the same amount of damage but have increased range but also generate more heat. Pulse lasers are just that lasers that pulse the laser beam at the target. Pulse lasers generate more heat than regular lasers but do their damage over a shorter period, this usualy means the damage is more focused.

ppcPPC is short for Particle Projector Cannon. PPCs shoot a concentrated stream of protons at a target that does both heat and kinetic damage. PPCs currently come in two variations the PPC and the ER PPC (Extended Range Particle Projector Cannon). ER PPCs produce more heat than the PPC but have an extended range and can also do damage to targets within 90 meters (this is one of the things a regular PPC cannot do). PPC now disrupts ECM for 4 seconds.

Other Systems:

ECMECMs was recently intorduced to MWO and they allow you to hide your mech signature from enemy mech computers so your mech cannot be locked onto by missle systems or be detected at range. This system can also allow you to counter other ECM systems when within 200 meters. ECM can also be temporarily disrupted when the mech is hit by a PPC for four seconds. Currently there are only a few mechs that can use ECM at this time.
